Turkey Troubles

Thanksgiving is one of the hardest times for your drains. Think about all of the rich sauces, oils and dressings that are prepared during this special day. It's important to give your drains a break during this cooking frenzy though! Here are a few tips to help you avoid costly clogs during the Thanksgiving holiday:

Fryer Grease

If you have gallons of turkey-frying oils to dispose of, recycle the substances at your community’s transfer or recycling center. The Alamance County Landfill will accept fryer oil. Visit http://www.alamance-nc.com/landfill for more information.

Dishes, Pots and Pans

Wipe any dishes, pots or pans with a paper towel before washing to ensure that any fats, oils or grease are not going down your drain. No-no’s include fatty substances such as lards/shortening, butter/margarine, food scraps, dairy products, batter and icing, salad dressings and sauces.

Garbage Disposals

Avoid putting stringy or fibrous waste down the disposal.Do not wait until the disposal is full to turn it on. Use plenty of water, and let it run for 20 or 30 seconds until it is clear.
