Feed the birds!

Excerpt Taken from Mother Nature Network By Robin Shreeves

Bacon attracts bluebirds, crows, jays, ravens, starlings, woodpeckers, and Carolina wrens. The simplest way to package bacon grease for bird feeding is in metal tuna or cat-food cans. Punch a hole in the side wall of the can with a nail. Use pliers to bend the tip of a wire into a knot that won't slip through the hole, and thread the wire through the can for hanging. Fill the can to the brim with cooled, but still liquid, bacon grease, then stick it in the refrigerator to solidify. Once the grease is no longer runny, hang the can from a branch.
Bluebirds, jays, woodpeckers, and Carolina wrens readily accept this source of fat, whether you offer it straight or use it in bird-treat recipes. Bacon grease also draws crows, starlings, and even ravens.

Ingredients
1 1/2 tsp grease
1 1/2 tsp honey
1 egg
3/4 cup +1 tbsp milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
additional grease for frying
maple syrup

Directions
Grease a 1/4 cup measuring cup and put your cast iron pan over a low heat to warm it up. In a large bowl combine the honey, egg, milk and the warm grease. Add dry ingredients and stir until smooth. Add enough grease to your pan to coat the bottom. Using a well-greased measuring cup, scoop out the batter. Pour it into the pan to create round pancakes. When the pancake edges start to curl under and bubble, flip and cook until both sides are browned. Serve with maple syrup, and garnishes of your choice!

Recycling Fats, Oils and Grease

Instead of throwing FOG in the trash, you can save it for later! Add extra flavor to your salads, desserts and more by recycling fats, oils and grease. Our favorite is to add bacon grease to kale or collard greens to add a little extra kick without using too much meat.
